Departure Day
6th August 2018
Finally we are on our way, flying to Abu Dhabi tonight.
A 2 day stopover has been planned to break up the trip and minimise the jet lag, as we will be non stop once we get to Athens.
Leaving the cool temperatures of Sydney will be a pleasant change, however, the forecast 39 C in Abu Dhabi tomorrow is a bit extreme. We are not packing any winter clothes, as the heat wave in Europe continues and we are expecting temperatures in Athens and throughout the islands to be in the mid 30's.
The airport shuttle from our place takes only an hour and 10 minutes , at absolute peak hour, arriving at the airport just before 6pm. Fortunately the check in queue was not yet fully developed, so we were through in around 30 mins. Immigration clearance was very quick with the facial recognition scanners now being widely used, and no forms to fill in.
Departure time isn't until 8.55pm, so we decided to have a light meal of wonton noodle soup to tide us over until the onboard dinner is served, probably at around 11.30pm.
It was a very full flight with no spare seats in the Etihad A380 that we could see. There were you kids everywhere, so we were not looking forward to the potential for crying kids all night. Fortunately they settled down after a few hours, but the flight was very crowded. At least it left on time and arrived in Abu Dhabi early.
Seating is tight and pretty uncomfortable for such a new plane. I wouldn't rush to take another Etihad flight.
